My name is Sandy and that oh-so-handsome, beefy burrito of a man putting that smile on my face, is my husband, Brent. We are gamer nerds who met in high-school and ended up married, raised a daughter who is now married and having kids of her own, and we now focus on our three fur babies. We’re pretty cool in the “bordering on hermits” kind of way. We are hilarious and after decades as friends we still actually seek out each other’s company and are nauseatingly in love. So why do we need to brag about all this on the internet?
We don’t…well, he doesn’t. Over the past decade of marriage, this amazing man has taught me the actual meaning of unconditional love. The kind of love that inspires fairytales and makes you wish upon a star and all that cheesy mellow-dramatic crap that keeps Hollywood and the Lifetime network in business. But like any Hollywood romance, something has to go wrong, right? Nobody gets a happy ending (unless you like Asian massage parlors) - but I digress. The past year has been a very rough journey for our tiny little family as Brent has been diagnosed with cancer (kind-of) and Lou Gehrig’s Disease/ALS (for certain).
There will be plenty more details added in our blogs. I hope to talk him into sharing some of his stories from the past that I never want to forget and hopefully he can be inspired to share his perspective on how this diagnosis has changed his priorities and outlook on life. I am using this as a tool to keep myself sane. I’ve been writing since I was young and I need an outlet. I mean, if I’m honest, I actually NEED therapy, but in lieu of that for now, I will share our triumphs and struggles as we learn to live with ALS.
While we know that our ridiculous love cannot cure this horrible disease, we do believe that love - OUR love - is enough to get us to the end with all the friendship, laughter, and compassion we can muster.
Join us on our journey…or ignore another blog about other people’s problems. We really are fine, either way.
With all our hearts and all our farts,
Brent & Sandy
